Challenge Seven: My Thoughts · Change the World

If you want to save the world, go eat a taco.

198 delicious mexican taco

I was eating a taco today and I started thinking about all the problems that are facing the world. I really would like the world to be a better place. It’s just easy to get discouraged when you realize that no matter who gets elected there are still going to be a lot of messes and problems.

I sat there eating my taco and feeling discouraged ,and then I had this thought. If you want to change the world, start with yourself. Start with the seven deadly sins. It was really a profound thought. It was so profound that I wrote a letter to the entire world all about my thought.

Dear World (or at least the 40 people who read my blog),

There are seven deadly sins. These sins are greed, pride, lust, gluttony, envy, wrath and sloth.  They are called deadly because they are the sins that encourage other sins. Most people have heard of the deadly sins, but did you know there are also seven heavenly virtues. The interesting thing is that each virtue is the opposite of the sin. It’s like a road map for making the world a better place.  So, we just need to encourage  prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude, faith, hope and charity and the world’s problems will all be solved. Sounds easy, right?

Take a minute to close your eyes and imagine with me a nice little world that strives to have those seven virtues.

Our national debt problem is now solved.  There would be enough food for all of the people on Earth. Prudence is the careful management of resources and the ability to use reason and thinking to solve problems.  People would have what they need and not envy or lust after other people’s stuff. Crime would go down. Hate crimes would go down. Violence would be non-existent. We could disagree with each other about religion, politics and everything else without calling each other names.  Wars. Nope, we’d have too much charity for our fellow human beings to bomb them. We might still have disagreements, because we’re human people with faults. If that happened, we would just sit down at the same table and through moderation in action and thought  figure things out. After all, moderation in action, thought and feeling is the definition of temperance.  The courts would never throw the wrong person in jail, because everything would be just. Global warming. That would be solved too, because we’d be wise with our resources. Life might still be challenging at times, but we’d all have the mental strength and courage to help us to face fears until things are resolved. That’s called fortitude and we’re going to need it in buckets if we want to create a brighter future. On days, we weren’t 100% it would be okay, because people would be kind to us.  In this perfect little world, we’d have faith and hope in each other, in God and in the belief that there really is room in the beautiful world for us all to live peacefully with each other.

Thanks for listening, World.

Love, Amee

It all made perfect sense while I was eating my taco today. I thought about eating a second taco to see if I had any other thoughts, but that might be considered gluttony.

Ramblings from the Birthday Girl

Little Family

I turned old today.

It’s my birthday. I’m now 38. You might not think that is old, but it’s older than I’ve ever been in my entire life. Birthdays are a time to celebrate. I get to open birthday gifts. It’s just a fun day on my birthday.

I received a very special gift 38 years ago. I was given these two wonderful people as my Mom and Dad. It’s the best birthday gift I’ve ever been given. Mom and Dad have shaped my life in a beautiful way.

My parents

Thank you for my birthday, Mom and Dad.

I love you both so very much!

Freelove Olney

Old Book

I’ve started a new hobby. I’m spending a few hours each month looking at pictures and family pedigree charts. It’s a little addictive. I keep hunting for more stuff.  In particular, I’m interested in  people’s names.  I’ve got plenty of ordinary names like Mary and John in my family, but there is this whole side with unique names. I wish that birth certificates and family Bibles came with the back story. There have been a few that I’ve just scratched my head. What were your parents thinking?

Here is my favorite girl’s names. Freelove  Olney.   How cool is that name? It sounds like a flower child from the 1970’s.  Nope, the year was 1702.  She had to live an interesting life with such a creative name.

If you are having a little girl, feel free to borrow some names from my  ancestors.  Discovered, Hallelujah and Thankful all made me smile.   If you’re having a boy, I’m sorry but my ancestors can’t help you with ideas. The guy names sound like they could be my classroom attendance roster.  John,  Joshua, David, George, Stephen, Richard, Thomas, Paul.  You get the idea.

New Years Resolutions 2016

My Hula-hooping update–New Year’s Resolution 2016

Hula-hoop

I’m still hula-hooping through 2016.  In other words, I’m still working on the New Year’s resolutions.  I’ve twirled my hula-hoop around during the month of January for some of my resolutions.  I dropped the hoop on other goals. It’s a good thing that I get a new day every day. It helps when you can start over to try again.

1.Do a 10 minute mediation/deep breathing exercise every day

In January, I did my mediation/deep breathing exercise 16/31 days.

2. Exercise five days a week for at least  30 minutes

I’m happy to report that I exercised two days a week during the month of January.

3. Find something funny every day

This one wasn’t hard to do at all. I’m always finding funny stuff.  For example, I saw an ant trying to eat a Snickers bar. The poor ant wasn’t having any luck because the wrapper was still on the candy bar. It was quite funny. So, I helped the ant out and opened up the wrapper.  It made me laugh to see the ant go crazy with delight. I can be a hero to one little ant.

4. Eat a fruit or vegetable with every meal

I completely forgot about this one. The hula-hoop dropped but it’s been picked up again for this week.

5. Do something social with friends once a week

Yes! This one happened. I did something social with friends every week.

6. Write down all of my negative thoughts and try to re-frame them in a little cognition journal.

I completely forgot about this one. Oops. I can’t be too negative about not meeting the goal though. It would defeat the whole purpose of the goal.

7. Leave work by 4:30 p.m. every day. I won’t be able to do all of these happy brain/happy body things if I work all the time.

I tried.  I need to set an alarm on my cell phone to remind me to leave at 4:30. I tend to stay to 5:00 p.m. I want to break that little habit.

Wonder Women

Wonder Woman: Meet Stephanie

We live in a divided world. It’s a world where people pick a side, set up a tent and start throwing oranges at anyone who picks a different camp site.  It’s a world where name calling has replaced discussion. That’s why this week’s Wonder Woman is so important. She has found a way to maintain her own thoughts and beliefs without trampling on the right of others to disagree with her.

Have you ever met such a person? I have. Meet Stephanie. She’s a diplomat.

Steph

I met Stephanie at work. I was in the break room waiting for my food to cook in the microwave. It’s amazing what you can see in 5 minutes. Two of my co-workers sat at a nearby table debating a controversial political topic. I could tell they had been at the debate for a while. Voices were loud and words were filled with sarcastic personal attacks. The frustration was just dripping off both of their bodies and the cynicism could be felt throughout the break room. The debate was no longer a healthy dialogue with thoughtful questions. It had turned into war. Then Stephanie walked into the room. I watched in amazement as she engaged her co-workers in a short conversation about the same topic. It was like watching a conductor bring the strengths of the various instruments together to create a beautiful symphony. Stephanie found a way to validate the feelings of the two co-workers and interject her own thoughts without criticizing either person. The entire tone of the conversation changed. The co-workers lowered their voices, their language switched to dialogue instead of attacks. They decided that although they could never agree about the topic that they could agree to not call each other names. The feeling in the room went from frustration to peace.  The words of the prayer by St. Francis of Assisi came into my mind . “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love”.

That’s what Stephanie did that day. She was an instrument of peace and restored love to the lunch room. Since that time, I’ve observed these two co-workers. They still talk about all kinds of political, religious and social issues. They still have very differing views on many issues and will probably never vote the same way. That’s not the point.  The point is that they have found a way to talk about hard things without throwing attacks at each other. I don’t think this happened by accident. I believe that Stephanie started that for them. She mediated the conversation and helped everyone put down their oranges.

And for that, Stephanie is a Wonder Woman.

The Test

Two months ago, I found myself in a public bathroom at my local grocery store. I usually try to avoid grocery store bathrooms  but I was feeling desperate. Sometimes my body just doesn’t want to wait until I get home. As I was washing my hands, I saw a white pregnancy test stick sitting on the counter. The results were facing me so I read them. Two Lines. Pregnant.

I glanced around the bathroom to see if any one was there. It was empty. I looked at the pale walls and the smudged mirror. I saw the little sign with the cleaning schedule over the overflowing trash can. And then it hit me. Two Lines. Pregnant.

The image of the lines burrowed into my mind and I started to cry. “Who are you? What is your story? Why are you taking the test here at the grocery store instead of the home of a family member or a dear friend?”

The two lines dug deeper into my soul and I cried harder. “Are you safe? Do you have someone who really loves you?”  In that moment, I tried to believe that you were a thirty-something-year-old woman. You were just too excited to wait to get home to start the test. Glancing around the room though, I knew that probably wasn’t the case. You had taken the test in the grocery store bathroom. Maybe you had a friend with you. Maybe you were alone. Either way, you had waited the three minutes for the results and then left the stick on the counter. “Where did you go? Are you safe? Do you have someone who really loves you?”

The image of the two lines has haunted me the last two month. I keep thinking about it.  I’ve prayed for you my unknown sister.  I’ve given money to charity that helps woman in hopes that they will somehow help you. I’ve prayed again. I hope that you are okay.  The image of the lines has burrowed into my heart.  Two Lines. Pregnant.

Today is Civil Rights Day. It’s a day to remember Martin Luther King Jr, and others, who fought for equal rights for all Americans. We remember the stories.  I watch the I have a dream speech and I think about how far our country has come. I also think about where we still need to go. There’s still so much that needs to be done.

Then I remember you. The girl or woman who took the pregnancy test in the grocery store bathroom. A person who has become real to me.  My sister. I hope you are okay.

Dear Sister,

Your story matters. You matter. Please believe that.

With Love,

Amee

Lottery Winnings and Memes

I didn’t win the lottery. Of course, I didn’t play it either so losing wasn’t a huge surprise. Last night, I had a funny dream about the lottery though. I dreamed the guy that won the big jackpot of 10 billion decided to give me 1/2 of the money as a gift.  I paid off my house, helped out my siblings with their mortgages, took my parents on a European tour, started a non-profit, landscaped the backyard, hired a cook to make me delicious, healthy meals and still had enough money to live comfortably on the interest for the rest of my life. In the middle of spending lots of money,  I sat down at a computer and created one of those memes you see on social media.  Then I woke up.

If I can figure out how to make a meme, I must be pretty cool.

I didn’t win the lottery, but I did figure out how to make one of those memes. By the way, if you are that lucky person who won 10 billion dollars, I’d be happy to take 1/2 of it of it as a gift.

Challenge: Hula-Hoop Brain Challenge

Your Brain is Like a Hula-Hoop

Hula-hoop

Happy brains are like hula-hoops.

The last few weeks I’ve been reading research articles by really smart people on how our emotional health impacts our physical health.  I won’t quote all the studies but the gist is that happy brains build happier bodies and happy bodies build a happier brain. It’s like a hula-hoop. You just have to start twirling and dancing to reap the benefits. If the hula-hoop drops, be gentle on yourself, pick it up and try again. I’m really good at starting the hula-hoop. I’m working on picking up the hoop and trying again when I drop my goals.

My latest challenge is to build a happier brain and body by doing the following activities.

1. Do a 10 minute mediation/deep breathing exercise every day

2. Exercise five days a week for at least  30 minutes

3. Find something funny every day

4. Eat a fruit or vegetable with every meal

5. Do something social with friends once a week

6. Write down all of my negative thoughts and try to re-frame them in a little cognition journal

7. Leave work by 4:30 p.m. every day. I won’t be able to do all of these happy brain/happy body things if I work all the time.

“By faithfully working eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day.”—Robert Frost

I love poets. They really know how to do the happy brain dance with their figurative hula-hoops.

Take Me to Your Leader

I’ve tried many times over the years to make a homemade face mask that will magically erase all of my acne.  I finally gave in and bought one of those face masks from the store. The package says it will magically erase all of my acne. We will see if it works. The fun part is that I look like a green alien.    Greetings Earthlings!  Take me to your leader.

I will be announcing my latest challenge on this blog tomorrow morning.  I’m so excited. I wonder what the challenge will be. I guess I better start thinking about it so I can announce it.  (Actually, I do know what it will be. You’ll have to wait to to find out though. )

Be happy!  Be yourself!
