My Dish Adventure

100_3475

I hate washing dishes. I don’t mind vacuuming, doing laundry and a list of other household chores, but dishes are just annoying. This week I took a holiday from doing dishes. It wasn’t an intentional holiday. It just kind of happened. I had a cold and I just didn’t feel like doing the dishes. I’ve also been super busy with the end of the school year. So, the dishes just piled up for 5 days. Today is Day 5 and the pile is pretty high. In fact, there are no clean dishes left. I get some really brilliant ideas when I’m lying on the couch moaning about things. I figured out that I could just get rid of the dishes and start all over with new dishes. Problem Solved. So, that is what I did. I put all the dishes into a large trash bag and hauled them outside to the bin.  The kitchen sink looked great. I was feeling pretty good about my plan. It was brilliant except for one thing.  I’m not rich and I really don’t have the money to buy all new dishes. So, I went back to the bin and reclaimed the mess.

The dishes are now washed, and I’m headed to the store to buy paper plates and bowls. I may not be rich, but I think I can afford a few little luxuries during the last two weeks of school.

Memory Lane

Have you ever done something absolutely crazy, but it felt right and in the end you are glad you did?  Last summer, the Accountant and I went on a road trip to visit his awesome relatives in Vancouver.

While we were driving through a beautiful forest, when  we saw two young people hiking  with large backpacks and a little hitchhiking sign.  We passed by them.  I tried to ignore the feeling, because I could just imagine the end of our tragic tale. Two bodies found  after picking up kids with backpacks. Nathan said exactly what I was thinking. “We have to go back and pick up those kids. I really don’t want to get murdered, but it feels right to give them a ride”. Continue reading “Memory Lane”

Guest Post: Celeste

I would like you to meet my friend Celeste. Celeste has a great success story. Celeste overcame personal and health challenges to let go of over 50 pounds, finish nursing school and reclaim a life of happiness after a difficult family situation. She is an awesome person. Here is her wisdom for all of us.

Goals…Dreams…Accomplishment…We all have them! We all are working on something that we think will bring us peace, happiness and joy. But how can we be sure that the goal we are working on is worthy of our time and effort? How do we know we have followed the right path? At times the path we thought was the right one to follow abruptly ends, takes a sharp turn or makes a fork in the road and we have to choose what to do next.

Over our lifetime, we all will complete some goals, dreams and accomplishments. We all have different challenges and trials that will lead us down the path to “accomplishments.” Being a Hospice Nurse, I have gained a unique perspective on our mortal experience here on earth. I am starting to realize it is not how much money we have in the bank, how much education we attained or how beautiful our house is. Yes, these achievements bring a certain level of satisfaction to our lives but in the end the real accomplishment is how we overcame our trials in life. C.S. Lewis said, “Hardship often prepares an ordinary person for an extraordinary destiny.” Stay focused and remember, anything worth having will have some bumps along the road but those “bumps” we experience are the best teachers in life!

You can read more about Celeste and her amazing work to build healthier lives at Heart to Heart Nursing. I am looking for other amazing woman and men who have a story to share about their dreams and goals.  If you are one of them, please contact me.

Active and Happy

My ninth challenge is to do a recreational activity every day. I’m not talking about going to the gym and working out for an hour. Although going to the gym is a good idea,  I’m using the 13 day challenge to add more physical fitness into my life. The criteria is that it needs to be something that I can enjoy while doing it.  I’ve noticed that people that are most happiest with their bodies use their bodies to have fun at activities.

I started this challenge three days ago. So far,  I’ve gone bowling, played in a swimming pool and went for a walk around a pretty lake.

Positive Thinking

Today I went to a holistic health care conference with a friend. We had a good time looking at the vender booths and going to the different workshops. I attended a workshop about the power of positive, happy thoughts. The speaker told everyone that they could improve their health and make more money by changing their thinking. I agree with the health part, but I was a bit skeptical about the money. After the presentation, I went to the bathroom. While I was  sitting there doing my business, a quarter came rolling in from another stall. I was pretty excited and cried out loud. “It works.  Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts”.
